Dr. Bernhard Hainz

Founding partner of the law firm CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz in Vienna. One of Austria's most prominent art collectors.

More information

Together with his wife Elisabeth, he has been building a collection of Austrian and international art since 1994, beginning with a programmatic dual purchase: a Rudolf von Alt and a Miró. The collection spans the arc from the 19th century through Classical Modernism to contemporary art, with a clear focus on Austrian art after 1945, from Maria Lassnig, Arnulf Rainer and Franz West through Viennese Actionism and VALIE EXPORT to emerging positions, complemented by international reference works such as Joseph Beuys, Rosemarie Trockel and Lawrence Weiner.

He places particular value on discovering and presenting positions still under the radar of mainstream perception, such as Kurt Absolon, Marc Adrian, Traudel Pichler, Erwin Thorn, Helga Philipp and Oswald Stimm.

His credo: not to hoard art, but to live with it and make it accessible. Across roughly 3,000 m² of office space at Vienna's Schillerplatz, the contemporary collection is part of daily life for staff and clients. "The firm name CMS becomes both ambition and programme here: Contemporary Museum Schillerplatz."
